our Artisans

Our mission is to preserve age-old textile techniques that tell stories of culture and craftsmanship. Each piece we create is a tribute to the artisans who pour their heart and soul into every weave. By embracing traditional handloom methods, we ensure that our creations are not only stunning but also kind to our planet. We offer one-of-a-kind designs that stand out in a world of fast fashion. Together, let’s cherish our planet and honor the artistry of tradition"

The Weaving Journey
Our fabric is the result of several thousand hours of meticulous hand-weaving by the skilled artisans of Uttarakhand—true gatekeepers of our heritage textiles. Every thread they weave carries the legacy of generations, using techniques passed down through time. This gentle, low-impact process produces no carbon emissions, aligning perfectly with our philosophy of mindful, sustainable fashion.

At Mandagamana, we are not in a hurry. We consciously choose to stay away from high-speed, mill-made fabrics in favor of the soulful rhythm of handlooms. Handwoven textiles not only preserve cultural craftsmanship but also allow the fabric to breathe, offering superior comfort, durability, and individuality. Each weave has its own character—no two are exactly alike—making every piece truly one of a kind.

 Handcrafted
Our fabrics are not dip-dyed or block-printed—they are adorned through the exquisite art of Pen Kalamkari, where every motif is meticulously hand-drawn with a kalam (pen). Yes, you heard that right—each piece is a canvas of painstaking craftsmanship that takes days, sometimes weeks, to complete.

Traditionally rooted in the exclusive use of natural dyes, this ancient technique is both an artistic and alchemical process. It involves the use of natural ingredients like milk, myrobalan, jaggery, and rusted iron nails—creating earthy, enduring colors without a trace of chemicals. Every handcrafted fabric tells a story—of patience, heritage, and timeless beauty—while staying true to our ethos of sustainability and mindful creation.

From Vision to Vogue: Our journey began with a simple yet powerful vision - to redefine fashion by blending heritage craftsmanship and zero-waste design

Meet our Founder

Hi, I’m Lakshmi Uma, and am the founder of Mandagamana. My love for textiles began at home, where I was surrounded by the beautiful handwoven fabrics cherished by my mother and grandmother. These artisanal beauties, with their vibrant colors and intricate weaves, inspired me from a young age. I would spend hours transforming their cherished six-yard sarees into unique silhouettes, frocks, and skirts, dreaming of the day I could create something meaningful from these traditions. This early passion for textiles fueled my desire to turn it into a lifelong journey. I pursued a Master’s degree in Textiles in India, immersing myself in the rich heritage of our craft while learning the intricate art of dyeing and printing techniques. My professional path led me into garment manufacturing, where I spent over four years understanding the ins and outs of the industry in India. When I moved to the USA, my journey took a new direction. I deepened my knowledge by earning an Associate Degree in Apparel Design and Production, with a focus on sustainable fashion. This experience opened my eyes to the environmental impact of fast fashion—the industrial waste, surplus production, and the heart-wrenching reality of how much ends up in landfills. Connecting the dots between my childhood love for traditional textiles and the urgent need for sustainability, I knew I had to create something different. Mandagamana was born from this realization—a slow fashion brand that honors the artisans, the earth, and the timeless beauty of our heritage. This is more than a brand for me—it’s a way to honor my roots, give back to the artisans, and contribute to a more sustainable future for us all.
